Which Solar Window Film Is Best for Your Home?
If your home gets too hot in summer, suffers from strong glare, or receives intense sunlight through large windows, solar window film can make a significant difference.
But there isn’t one solar window film that is best for every home.
The right film depends on several factors, including the type of glass you have, which direction your windows face, how much heat and glare you want to reduce, how much natural light you want to retain, and whether you prefer a reflective or more discreet appearance.

These are starting points, not universal rules. Your glazing and the position of the window should be checked before selecting a film.

The best film depends first on the problem you’re trying to solve.
Your home gets too hot
Solar-control film reduces the amount of solar energy passing through the glass. This can make rooms more comfortable during sunny weather and can reduce the amount of work required from your air conditioning.
The amount of temperature reduction you experience inside your home will depend on many factors, including:
- the type of glazing
- window orientation
- size of the glass area
- outside temperature
- shading from balconies, blinds or buildings
- insulation
- ventilation
- the amount of solar exposure
- whether air conditioning is operating
For this reason, we don’t promise a fixed reduction in room temperature for every property.
Instead, we look at the actual windows and recommend a film based on the solar exposure and your objectives.
Your windows create too much glare
Solar film can substantially reduce glare from direct sunlight.
This can be particularly useful in:
- living rooms
- bedrooms
- offices
- rooms with televisions
- rooms with computer screens
- south- and west-facing rooms
You want protection from UV
Professional solar window films can block approximately 99% of UV radiation, depending on the specific film and glazing configuration.
UV protection can help reduce the exposure of furnishings, flooring, artwork and other interior materials to ultraviolet radiation.
It is important to remember that UV protection is not the same thing as complete protection from fading. Visible light and other factors also contribute to fading.
You want daytime privacy
Reflective solar films such as Silver can provide significant daytime privacy because the brighter exterior reflects light while the darker interior is less visible from outside.
However, solar film does not provide guaranteed privacy 24 hours a day.
At night, when your interior is illuminated and it is darker outside, the privacy effect can be reduced or reversed.
If night-time privacy is important, blinds, curtains or dedicated privacy glass/film may still be required.
Silver or Titan: which is better?
We offer two main solar-control film ranges: Silver and Titan.
Neither is universally “better”. They provide different visual and performance characteristics.
Silver solar window film
Silver films have a more reflective appearance and are particularly suitable when strong solar control and daytime privacy are important.
They can be a good choice for homes with:
- strong direct sunlight
- large areas of glazing
- significant glare
- privacy requirements
- south- or west-facing windows
The reflective appearance is also something to consider aesthetically. Some homeowners like the mirrored effect; others prefer something more discreet.
Titan solar window film
Titan provides strong solar control while offering a different, generally less mirror-like appearance than Silver.
It can be a good option if you want to improve solar performance without the stronger reflective appearance associated with Silver film.

The exact performance depends on the specific film selected and the glazing it is applied to.
What do 20, 35 and 50 mean?
One of the most important decisions is the film shade.
The numbers refer primarily to Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — in other words, how much visible light is allowed through the film.
Generally:
- 20 = darker film, stronger solar/glare control
- 35 = medium shade and a good compromise
- 50 = lighter film, retaining more daylight
The lower the VLT, the darker the window will appear.
Silver 20
Choose 20 when maximum solar and glare control is more important than retaining maximum daylight.
It can be particularly suitable for windows receiving intense direct sunlight.
The trade-off is that the room will appear darker.
Silver 35
For many homes, 35 can provide the best compromise between solar control and natural light.
It is worth considering if you want:
- noticeable solar control
- reduced glare
- good daylight
- a less dramatic change in the appearance of the room
Silver 50
50 allows considerably more visible light through than 20.
It can be a better option when keeping rooms bright is a priority, while still providing solar-control benefits.

Not if we choose the right shade. Silver 35/50 and Titan 35/50 keep rooms bright while still cutting heat and glare.
Can film be installed on double or triple glazing?
Yes. For double/triple, Low‑E or safety glass we use exterior XTR films (Silver or Titan) to avoid thermal stress and seal issues.
How long does installation take?

Does solar film work in winter?
